If you find or see a lost cat please contact your local animal control officer AND your local animal shelter(s) as soon as possible. (Do not assume one will contact the other.)

MLCR FaceBook page: https://www.facebook.com/MaineLostCatRecovery. Maine Craigslist Lost & Found page: https://maine.craigslist.org/search/laf. Make a "found cat" poster. Post “found” posters within a five-block radius of your home. Check with your neighbors. Most lost cats are usually fairly close to home. Some are even mis-identified as 'feral' or 'stray' cats because they exhibit fearful behavior. Also, have the animal scanned for a microchip at your local veterinarian or shelter; this quick ID check could help you quickly reunite the cat with its family. Sheltering the cat temporarily while you look for its family. If you decide to keep the cat awhile, be sure to contact your local animal control officer or shelter first, so that they know that you have the cat, in case the owner contacts them. Before bringing the cat inside your home, make sure you can keep your own pets safely separate; the found cat could be sick, fearful, or aggressive with other animals. Before you take a 'stray' or found cat to a shelter... Is the cat sleek, shiny, fat, or in good condition? Are you sure it is actually lost and not just visiting your doorstep? If the pet is collarless, don't automatically assume it is also ownerless. Check with neighbors, review online posts for potential matches...and ask around (neighbors, mailman, local vet, pet groomers, etc.). It may not be lost at all. Don't adopt it as your own or give it to someone else before you do everything you can to find the owner. Keep in mind that a pet you have found may have been lost the very day you have found it.
